The Beginning

David enters the Utah College of Massage Therapy’s 815.5-hour Professional Massage Therapist certification-program – an evening course, spanning 1 year.

Joins the AMTA

AMTA member logo

As a massage therapy student, David joins the largest, non-profit, Professional Association in the United States – the American Massage Therapy Association. The AMTA has state-chapters, and he maintains his membership and continues to serve as a volunteer for 15 years (including as Chapter President) with the Nevada Chapter.

David becomes a Certified Massage Therapist!

Starts New Job

Moving from Las Vegas over the weekend, David shows up for his First Day of employment with the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel as a Licensed Massage Therapist in Pasadena, CA.

February 1

Became Nationally-Certified


David passes the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork’s (NCBTMB’s) National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCETMB) and becomes “Nationally-Certified in Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork” (NCTMB) – he maintains his credential, which has, since 2013, evolved into “Board-Certified in Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork” (BCTMB).

January 6

New Staff Position

Using his Bachelor Degree earned at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, in Secondary Education – English, David is accepted as a Staff Member at his massage-school alma mater: the Utah College of Massage Therapy, Nevada Campus. His first position at the school is Classroom Manager for CV-14, a year-long Evening class of future Professional Massage Therapists.

November 4

HIM’s Grand Opening

David starts his private practice as a Sole Proprietor in the City of Henderson, NV, with his first business-license as an Independent Massage Therapist.

January 5

New Faculty Position

The next step in working with UCMT was to start in the Education Department – David started as an Evening Teaching Assistant and moved into the Adjunct Faculty-position of Professional Development Instructor in August of 2008 while maintaining and growing Hands In Motion.

October 8

Traditional Thai Massage Certificate: Earned

David expanded his professional scope by attending an NCBTMB-approved, Thailand-Government-Certified program: Traditional Thai Massage, at TMC School. He spent 25 days in Chiangmai, Thailand, immersing himself in the course (90 hours) and culture for 3 weeks, prior to earning his certificate.

July 1

Started Local Resource Company

David co-founded and -operated The Bodywork Concierge, a Henderson-based referral company for mobile Independent Massage Therapists across the Las Vegas Valley, for 2 years.

October 25

HIM’s Major Expansion

David geographically-expands his mobile, private practice into the jurisdiction of the County of Clark, NV, adding his second business-license as an Independent Massage Therapist.

June 1

Building-Up Local Massage Therapy Community

For 5 years, David organized and co-organized the Las Vegas Massage Therapy Meetup Group – a meetup.com-group of Licensed Massage Therapists and people interested in massage therapy that met in live venues: networking, earning Continuing Education Hours as credit toward renewal of their credentials, and general inspiration- and camaraderie-sharing.

November 11

HIM Becomes A Registered Reflexologist

David attends his Phase 2 course (of 2) that confers upon him the recognition by the International Institute of Reflexology as a Registered Reflexologist.

October 2

Starts New Position

While working Part-Time at the Ritz-Carlton, David picks up a second position as a Massage Therapist at Drift Hammam & Spa at Palms Place.

December 1

“The Largest Number of Massages Given, Simultaneously”

The Massage World Record Project (MWR Project Inc) was born: to benefit the Susan G Komen Foundation of Southern Nevada and set a Guinness World Record® for “the most simultaneous massages given at one time” – David co-founded and -operated this Nevada-Non-Profit for 2 years, garnering Massage-Industry-, local and national professional-, and SGK-SN-support for the event.

Leaving Ritz-Carlton…

With the closing of the Lake Las Vegas location and after 9 years with the Ritz-Carlton, David’s employment is terminated.

October 16

Ends New Position

After 4 years at Drift Hammam & Spa, David terminates his employ to dedicate 100% of his time to his mobile, private practice: Hands In Motion.

December 18

HIM Increases Reach

David adds another jurisdiction – the City of Las Vegas, NV – to his mobile, private practice … adding a third business-license as an Independent Massage Therapist.

September 1

In-Hospital Massage-Venture

Co-founded and -operated as Anatriptic Arts LLC, David worked with local hospitals and businesses to provide medically-oriented table and chair massage services for 2 years

Joins the ABMP

In an effort to expand is accountability for the Massage Therapy Profession’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, David takes on an additional, Professional Association membership as a Certified Member of the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals organization.

HIM Maximizes Impact

David adds the final jurisdiction – the City of North Las Vegas, NV – to his mobile, private practice … adding his 4th business-license as an Independent Massage Therapist. Hands In Motion is completely business-licensed to see any client in the entire Las Vegas Valley.

David J Otto, LMT BCTMB

attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English – Secondary Education in 1991. In 2001, he attended and was certified as a Professional Massage Therapist at the Utah College of Massage Therapy (UCMT), Nevada Campus.

In the 20 years since: David worked as a licensed massage therapist with the Ritz-Carlton for 9 years in Henderson, NV;  in 2003, he opened and continues his massage practice, Hands In Motion, in the Cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, & Henderson and Clark County business-license jurisdictions. In 2008, David worked with Drift Spa & Hammam at Palms Place, in Las Vegas, NV, for 4 years as a licensed massage therapist.

He instructed over 450 massage therapy students at the Nevada-campus of the Utah College of Massage Therapy regarding their professional development and other massage modalities for a total of 6 years; David, in 2004, attended TMC School in Chiangmai, Thailand, for a 90-hour Traditional Thai Massage Thai government & NCBTMB certification.

David also co-founded, -developed, and -operated the Bodywork Concierge in 2008 for 2 years, a marketing/networking business in Henderson, NV, for bodyworkers and bodywork clients; and, in 2009, co-founded the Nevada Nonprofit Organization MWR Project Inc, to facilitate a large-scale, simultaneous massage therapy session to benefit a local healthcare-/medical-condition-related 501(c) Charity and the Massage Therapy Foundation in a one-day, occasional Expo, Attempt at the Guinness World Record®, and Public & Professional education-based course offering. Additionally, David co-founded and -operated Anatriptic Arts, LLC – an organization providing Massage Therapist/independent contractor relationships for hire to medical facilities, businesses, and individuals seeking improving their Quality of Life through chair and mobile table massage therapy.

He serves the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) Nevada Chapter for going on 15 years as, currently: Government Relations Committee Chair, Education Committee Member, the Communications Committee Chair, and AMTA-NV.org Webmaster. In the past, he’s served as its President & 1st Vice-President, Delegate & Alternate Delegate, Newsletter Editor, and Member Committee Chair. David also co-organized the Las Vegas Massage Therapy Meetup networking group from 2007-2010.
